The wounded CBP Marine Interdiction agents were airlifted to the Puerto Rico Trauma Center. One U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent was killed and two were wounded Thursday off the coast of Puerto Rico in a shootout with people on a suspected smuggling vessel. A person aboard the vessel also died as a result of the shooting, said Jeffrey Quiñones , a spokesperson for CBP. Another person was arrested, the agency said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety did not immediately return a message seeking comment Thursday. Four other physicians who are EMS and trauma specialists, along with other expert advisors, will also help in the review, Escott said. He said the review will look at autopsy reports and medical records from hospitals and paramedics who treated the victims. McCraw told families of the children killed in the shooting that the Texas Department of Public Safety “did not fail” Uvalde during the response amid escalating scrutiny over the department’s actions.

A woman was killed and three people were injured in an apparent stabbing spree Monday morning in Long Beach, California, police said. As officers were at that scene, another stabbing was reported at 6:25 a.m. about a half-mile away, the Long Beach department said. One of the two was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries; the other was treated at the scene by responding officers, the Long Beach department said. Eight people were shot overnight near James Madison University in Virginia, leaving them with non-life threatening injuries, police said. A representative for James Madison University did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether any students, faculty or staff were among the injured. A representative for Sentara RMH Medical Center said the hospital initially received seven patients, two of whom were transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center that offers comprehensive care after traumatic injuries. The five patients who remained at Sentara RMH Medical Center had been discharged by Sunday afternoon, the spokesperson said. A representative for the University of Virginia Medical Center said they could not provide updates on patients' conditions without having identifying information for them.
